Metro Ethernet Service offers Ethernet access and Ethernet based services across a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) and extending to WAN (Wide Area Network) for high-speed bandwidth scalable from 4 Mbps to 1000 Mbps.
Metro Ethernet would enable high-speed connection between customer offices in the metro area on the same LAN, either through the private IP network or through Ethernet network, to share data, applications and information and have the optional to access to Internet.
- Single End-to-End Ethernet Protocol
Fewer protocol translations which consume less bandwidth. Ethernet in the First Mile or commonly known as EFM was defined in IEEE 802.3ah in 2004. The standard allows Ethernet to be used as a connection between Metro Ethernet and customer’s Ethernet network over either copper pairs or single mode fiber optics.
This technology allows consistency of Ethernet protocol and reduces overhead thus increasing performance and providing a more consistent connection to the user.
- New Infrastructure Access
EFM is based on G.SHDSL.bis technology. Thus, new G.SHDSL.bis cards will be installed in existing IP MSAN (Huawei and ZTE) in order to deliver the business Ethernet services. It is leveraging on existing copper infrastructure.
Since EFM access will use existing copper cables that are already laid on the ground, immediate installation can be done by TM hence reducing cost and time to serve.
- Utilizing current network
The EFM deployment strategy will be based on existing network topology in TM. Existing areas served by MSAN will be “upgraded” to support EFM in order to leverage on the footprint and reach to customer premises. For areas whereby copper is served from the exchange, EFM will be deployed on NGN AG which will have limited coverage area of 3km from the exchange.
- Serving BAU areas
Current MSAN in BAU areas was equipped with ADSL2+ and POTS modules to provide broadband and voice services to consumers. Where EFM service is required, G.SHDSL.bis card will be installed on the same chassis. The full EFM deployment will cover business Ethernet service over EFM, whereby it will cater for low speed Ethernet service requirements.
